From Texas Roots to Nationwide Reach: The Legacy of Hutcherson Construction, Inc.
Since 1979, Hutcherson Construction, Inc. has been laying the foundation for Texas’ future, one project at a time. What started in Arlington, Texas as a small, family-owned business has grown into a locally and nationally recognized name in commercial, mission-critical, and healthcare construction. With roots in Arlington, a heart grounded in family values, and a future built on quality, innovation, and integrity, Hutcherson Construction, Inc.’s legacy continues to grow, nearly five decades strong.
From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leadership
The story behind the company is rooted in both family and passion. Jim “Hutch” Hutcherson met the love of his life, Shirley, while they were both cheerleaders at the The University of Texas at Arlington. After transferring to Texas Tech University, Hutch earned his degree in architecture and returned to Arlington, where he and Shirley married and began building their life together. During the 1970s, Hutch moved his young family to Wichita, Kansas, where he worked as a project manager for a design-build firm specializing in large shopping malls. The experience gave him hands-on exposure to large-scale commercial construction and deepened his expertise in the field.
In 1979, after accepting a position as an architect with Zales Jewelry, Hutch and his wife Shirley returned to Arlington, Texas with their three children, Jay, Jan, and Kellie. Later that year, Hutch put his years of industry experience to work by founding Hutcherson Construction, Inc., right in the heart of the city where his journey first began. The company started by taking on local general contracting work—small restaurants and gas stations—and quickly expanded into larger projects, including telephone buildings for General Telephone (now Verizon).
By 1982, the business truly became a family affair. Jay Hutcherson joined his father to help grow the company, followed by their daughters Jan Gibson in 1988 and Kellie Coffee in 1991. Their involvement helped expand the company’s capabilities and solidify the family values that remain at the core of Hutcherson Construction Inc.’s culture today.
Retail Construction: The Foundation of Our First Decades
In its first two decades, Hutcherson Construction, Inc. completed projects for major national brands including 7-Eleven, Stop–N–Go, McDonald's, Jack in the Box, Dobbs House, and Walmart. These retail construction projects helped establish the company’s reputation for quality craftsmanship, on-time delivery, and client satisfaction.
Telecom Construction: The Project Type That Shaped Us
The true turning point came in the early 1980s, when Hutcherson Construction, Inc. began working with Southwestern Bell (now AT&T) in 1982, followed by GT in 1984. Over the next four decades, we completed more than 850 telecom construction projects—many in live, operational environments requiring precision coordination, MEP integration, and meticulous dust containment.
These high-tech facilities demanded a level of execution that shaped our approach to complex projects, laying the groundwork for expansion into another highly specialized industry.
Transition to Healthcare Construction
After nearly 20 years of telecom work, Hutcherson Construction, Inc. recognized key similarities between telecom and healthcare construction, including the need for uninterrupted services, strict cleanliness protocols, and complex infrastructure requirements.
In the early 1990s, the company began marketing its services to the medical sector, and quickly became a trusted builder for major healthcare organizations such as:
Baylor Surgical, and many more
Today, Hutcherson Construction, Inc. continues to deliver specialized medical construction projects across Texas, from hospitals and surgical centers to medical office buildings.
